About Suse Moore
Suse Moore, Creator of the 'Power Families'
Travelling through France on a windy day five years ago author Suse Moore saw a wind farm in action on the horizon. Inspired by the notion that this was an energy farm and not a traditional farm, where the land is worked to harvest food, she began to write a book about a boy's adventures on his wind farm in Scotland.
From this seed of an idea she researched extensively into renewable energies and came to realise how increasingly important and vital it was to introduce them into children's lives. The energy crisis was looming and renewable energy was not up on many people's radar as a serious source of power. Moore felt compelled to create the 'Power Families' series where the boy, named Max, is joined by cousins from across the globe - Ella Power on her sun farm in Australia, and Flo & Mo Power on their wave farm in California.
When it came to finding a publisher even though the series was deemed good it was dismissed by one of the majors as 'too worthy' and tackling a subject that they 'were not sure their readers were ready for yet'. After a year of searching Moore finally formed Jack Hook Ltd. in June 2006 and entered uncharted territory in the world of children's publishing. One of her greatest discoveries was a Scottish-based illustrator, Andy Elkerton. With him on board they worked together with an aim to create a product that was ethically produced and as good, if not better than, as what was out in the children's book market at the time.
In December 2006 the first book, 'Max Power and the Bagpipes', was released to rave reviews - 'A brilliant, eco-powered, bedtime story,' Families Magazines. The next book, 'Ella Power and the Dingo' will be released in April 2008.
