Faith Based Entertainment Company Mercer Merreweather to Redefine Christian Entertainment Industry.
Evangelicals and those wanting more moral based entertainment have been largely ignored until now. A full range of faith based show contents will appeal to this vastly under served market.
HOUSTON, TX, January 04, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Christian entertainment industry has vast growth potential much of which has been overlooked. When most think of faith based movies or programming, there are a few hits such as the Left Behind series and The Chronicles of Narnia. On average, faith based movies are not box office draws. As far as television programming, there are no name shows that readily come to mind on an international or even national scale. Growing frustration among evangelicals and those who desire more moral based content has grabbed the attention of a select group of Houston based entertainment executives at Mercer Merreweather.
Martha Bryant, President and CEO acknowledges attempts to bring the matter to the forefront by contacting major networks, production companies as well as motion picture studios has been an eye opening disappointment. When asked in a recent interview what has been the biggest challenge, her response was quite blunt, "Diluting bible based content to form a more mainstream appeal. It's about money. Sex, sex appeal and foul language are all big attractors. True, they are a part of society and can you remove those elements and still provide high level viewer ship and revenue? Yes. So why hasn't it been done on a regular basis? Fear. Fear to step out in faith. Fear as the first executive to make such a move it could be the end of their job or maybe even career. To put up $200M on a secular project with or without A list talent is fairly commonplace but, to put $200M on a faith based project with or without A list talent is rare."
(Excerpts from interview)
Interviewer "When you say mainstream, what are they asking of you?"
Ms Bryant "Tone down the use of direct quoted scripture; replace the name of Jesus with God in order for the viewer to identify with whatever God they serve."
Interviewer "What is your definition of faith based entertainment and would you interchange faith based with Christian?"
Ms. Bryant "My definition of faith based is the storyline having the Word of God as its basis where whatever direction the characters find themselves facing, they are choosing to either seek God's face or go it alone and find their own way. Not everyone chooses Him, we know this. As for part two, yes I would and do interchange faith based and Christian. The faith is based on the message Christ taught."
Interviewer "What are some of your projects and why haven't you gotten media attention if this is a market starved for this level of content?"
Ms. Bryant "Well, we have gotten media attention. Of course, not as much as we'd like but we have turned some heads and gotten feedback. Our projects run a full range of game shows, made for TV movies, soap operas, sitcoms, drama series', cartoons and other areas. We fully support teaching, praise and worship but, Christians also enjoy a good laugh and we'll have comedy specials as well as suspense thrillers. This is such an under served market."
Interviewer "What is your next step?"
Ms. Bryant " Get the word out of what we're doing. We're mounting a massive PR campaign in order to let those who support this industry of Christian entertainment know they do count; their voices have been heard. We will not appeal to everyone. Viewers have the opportunity to change the channel, not pay their money to see our movies at their local theaters. Secular entertainment will always have an audience but globally, we have millions that will stand with us."
Looking ahead to the 2009-10 season, there is a Christian and a secular network expressing great interest in the soap opera Parkville, and night time drama series, Dasher.
